Abstract

Abstract

PLWHA adherence to ARV treatment is critical in situations where high adherence is required to control virology, improve current condition, and reduce the risk of HIV transmission and ARV resistance. Compliance is determined by a complex constellation of factors, including socioeconomic, patient factors, patient conditions, therapeutic factors, and health services. Social support is one of the socio-economic dimensions that has been studied to increase health and mortality across various chronic diseases and conditions. This study aims to determine the relationship between social support and adherence to ARV treatment in PLWHA based on a literature study. The method used is a systematic review by analyzing articles that are valid and relevant to the research objectives. This study uses the Pubmed database with the keywords HIV or "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, Treatment Adherence and Compliance, Social Support." The search results found 7 articles that matched the research criteria. The results showed that there was a relationship between social support and medication adherence where 6 articles stated that social support and medication adherence were two interrelated things. PLWHA who have social support are more likely to comply with ARV treatment. Social support is provided by family, friends, or significant others in tangible and intangible forms. It is necessary to further research the forms and providers of social support that can increase adherence to ARV treatment.

Keywords: social support; medication adherence; ARV treatment; PLWHA
